Breast augmentation, the placement of implants, is intended to add volume and projection to the breast silhouette. Implants can also correct uneven breasts if one breast is larger than the other. A breast lift is intended to raise the breasts to a higher position on the chest by removing excess skin and tightening the breast tissue. The areola and nipple structure is also moved to match the higher position and if the areola has become enlarged, it can be reduced. A breast lift won’t create volume particularly in the upper area of the breast.
Most women over 30 have begun to experience some sagging which becomes more pronounced through the aging process. Women who have breastfed their babies or who have experienced significant weight loss will usually have significant sagging.
The best procedure for any patient is determined by the image goals of the patient. If the volume of the breast is satisfactory, a breast lift alone can be all that is needed to rejuvenate the breast contour. If volume is needed or there is a difference in the size of the breasts, a breast augmentation with lift will accomplish the goal of a breast profile that is youthful, firm and has the volume desired by the patient.

This allows recovery to be done simultaneously which decreases overall recovery time, as compared to if the procedures were done separately. Having one surgery also reduces the general risks of surgery and is more cost-effective. Dr. Correa advises each patient on the recovery timeline based on their unique needs.
Combining procedures also reduce the amount of discomfort patients must cope with. The addition of a breast lift with augmentation does not significantly increase discomfort and many patients are delighted to find the recovery is much easier than they anticipated. Pain medication is usually necessary only for a few days.
