tuberous breast in The Woodlands

tuberous breast surgery

The term “tuberous breast” refers to a collection of characteristics that can occur with breasts including an overall small size, a very constricted lower portion of the breast, relatively enlarged areolas which may appear ‘puffy’, and an apparently wide spacing between the breasts. One of the most common characteristics is a drooping type appearance of the nipple and areola over a constricted base of the breast.

methods of surgery

Tuberous breast surgery is usually done with a combination of techniques. This usually involves increasing the size of the breast with a breast implant (similar to a breast augmentation), as well as repositioning the breast to a more ideal location (such as in a breast lift or ‘mastopexy.’) In extreme cases, or in patients who desire a significantly larger size, sometimes tissue expansion is necessary.

Breast Augmentation

One of the most important aspects of tuberous breast surgery is to restore a normal volume to the breast. This is most easily done with a breast implant. Patients have a choice between saline or silicone. However, because of the nature of tuberous breast, silicone may give a more natural feel due to the relatively small amount of native breast tissue.

Breast Lift

Although many patients seeking tuberous breast correction surgery are young, due to the anatomic changes that take place, many ages can benefit from a breast lift or ‘mastopexy.’ This approach allows us to do several things simultaneously: reposition the nipple/areola, reshape the breast, as well as decrease the size of the areola, if necessary.

Tissue Expansion

In patients with tuberous breasts who either desire a significant increase in size or have an extreme form of the condition with very little native breast tissue, it may be necessary to use a tissue expander. A tissue expander is a type of breast implant that can be increased in size over time to increase the size of the breast gradually. This is different from a normal breast implant and represents the first stage of a 2-stage operation. Once you are happy with the size of your new breasts, we then do a breast implant exchange procedure to remove the tissue expanders and replace them with normal breast implants.

TUBEROUS BREAST SURGERY

why are my breasts different?

Most women don’t know that tuberous breasts represent a congenital anomaly (i.e., something you are born with and develop at puberty). In fact, many women think they are simply unlucky and have an unfavorable shape to their breasts. This can lead to significant distress, especially during adolescence and into adulthood when breast shape becomes more important to one’s sense of identity. Thankfully, there are effective procedures to help restore a more natural appearance as well as a fuller bust. This allows you to wear more varied clothing types and feel more comfortable.
